To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
Hi all, When I was installing the tone decoder unit I noticed 2 green
wires just to the left of where the decoder unit goes. These two wires
look like they are jumpers of some sort and I pretty sure they are for the
Mars/Cap mods. But I'm not brave enough to find out for myself, so I
thought I would see if anyone has clipped these wires yet, and what they
do.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Subject: HF Transceiver for Sale
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
I posted this a couple of days ago and had many, many inquiries but
no offers. I would like to sell the Kenwood TS-440S w/ AT either
separately or will sell everything as a package deal.
1.) Kenwood TS-440S w/AT. Purchased two years ago for about
$1,300. NEVER used. Has been sitting here for the past two
years. I am not really interested in HF. Would like to get
$1100 or best offer for the transceiver. Unit is in like-new
condition. Will ship in the original box. (With manual and
documentation)
2.) Trio CW Filter YK-88C Crystal Filter 8830.7 kHz (L71-0211-05).
3.) Service Manual for TS-440S with antenna tuner
4.) NPC Regulated Power Supply (25 amps). Meters for both Voltage
and Current.
5.) Cushcraft 5-band HF Antenna (ATV-5). I mounted this on the
roof for about 6 months until the neighbors started complaining. It
does have some normal corrosion. It breaks down into 4 or 5 ft lengths.
6.) Kenwood MC-85 Microphone Control Station. This is Kenwood's
Deluxe desk-top Microphone with built-in audio-level compensation (700
ohms) and undirectional electret condenser microphone.
I would like to sell everything as a package deal. I actually paid
about $1750 for all of the equipment. Make an offer.

Subject: Kenwd TS-520S, SE
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
I would like to thank everyone who replied concerning my request
for information about the Kenwood TS-520S HF radio!!!
I was overwhelmed by the responses!!
I have thus acquired a TS-520S by trade of some quipment with a friend.
This is my first HF rig, so now I must get to studying so I can upgrade!
The overal responses were as follows:
The TS-520S is a Good all-around basic rig
It is very durable, reliable, and easy to repair.
The average price should be somwhere between $300 and $400
depending on what accessories come with it.
Now that I have one, I am looking for anyone who would sell, or knows where
I can get any of the following accessories:
The digital display module
The external VFO
CW Filter
FM board (if exists)
External X-verters
I would appreciate you input on finding these!
Thanks again for all the replies!!!!!!

I've got a 79A also and was wondering if you knew what mode is invoked

some status messages - perhaps it's in "clone mode"?????.

Now you're talking, Al! I built my SB-102 in 1971 and I still use it as
a backup rig. The analog freq readout is good to within a few hunderd
cycles -- more than enough accuracy.
And while we're at it, how about a basic 2-meter mobile rig for around
$200?

: I think SB102 might be more expensive to make now than a computerized
: radio. Imagine using good-size coils with high Q, good switches,
: adjustments, good dial without backlash... For a switching power
: supply, I still remember one from Yaesu. It was filtered extensively
: yet the noise was excessive for in-house antennas.
Of course you would use modern circuit design techniques to lower cost.
(I should have said the *functional* equivalent of an SB-102.)
If you chose an IF frequency at an even MHz (say 9 MHz) then you could
use a simple frequency counter to replace the mechanical dial. (Just
use the kHz digits, since you already know what the MHz are.)
A cheap "flubber" membrane keypad could be used to replace mechanical
switches. And so on, you get the idea.

The older Icom battery packs do fit the HTX 202. I have been using the
Renewal batteries in my 202 for several months now with no problems.
Could there be something wrong with the rig?

I've used Icom packs on my 202 for some time now with no problems. Pardon
me a second and I'll see exactly what packs I'm using...(gets up, stagers over
to table of ham equipment...) okay, I'm using three different IC-BP7 packs.

Jeff,
I would not "sweat" the hot rig, but you would be wise to
only use high power when necessary to keep the problem in check.
My th78 gets pretty hot with extended xmit, but has not shown
any problems so far. I have put it up as a 5W digi and it
survived with no complaints.
Good luck with what appears to be a sweet rig

Subject: Where to get repeater ?
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
I've been wondering where I could get a simple repeater. I wanted to put
one in my car, so on climbing trips I would have a better chance of
"getting out" from my HT (an Alinco 580). I'd guess cross band would be
best as UHF might work better in mountainous terrain. I'm considering
just buying a mobile and using that, but I was wondering if there was
any such thing as a simple, inexpensive repeater. I haven't seen anything in any
of my catalogs.
At the same time, I'm open to suggestions as to how to increase the range
of a HT in the backcountry. (simple, as my pack is already full of climbing
gear :-)

number of amateurs are involved in CAP, MARS or both and have
legitimate use for some out of band capabilities.
Some of both, of course, goes on.

Subject : Re: Bullet proof Handheld?
Icom America has come out with a new marine band radio which appears
similar in size and shape to the IC-2GXAT unit. The interesting thing
about this radio is that they claim it can be immersed in water at
1 meter for 30 minutes without damage. They're talking salt water,
which will usually eat anything...
I'd like to see them make a Ham handheld in that casing, or a dual
2 meter/ marine radio. Either would be useful when out kayaking...
